Luis Arámburu Academy

The Municipal School of Music “Luis Arámburu” of Vitoria-Gasteiz was opened in September of 1992 as a result of the implantation of the LOGSE. In its first year, the School Luis Arámburu began with something more than 350 students and 8 professors, distributed between ten Instrumental Specialities and Musical Language.

After a year without a fixed location, the school happens to fix its permanent address to the old convent of “Aliadas” nuns, situated in the Zapatería street. There it would remain until January of 2002, date in which the new and present School in the Correria street was inaugurated. During all these years, the school has been witness of a continuous and fecund growth and progress, as much in the number of students like in the one of teaching subjects.

The present building of the Correria street occupies a part of the old constructed Council Seminary in 1880 by Martin de Saracíbar. The later extensions gave like consequence the formation of a complete apple in which an irregular patio is opened. After the cease in 1930 of the religious activity the building had diverse uses until, finally and after a thorough remodelling, it was destined to its present assignment like Music School.

They conserved the outer and inner facade, conditioning the arcs of this last to the redistribution of the classrooms. Also, the rest of the first wall of the city stayed and seated, it was found in the inner patio of the building during the archaeological excavations previous to the conversion works and that caused the transfer of the concert hall projected there to the basement of the annexed tower. Thus, in the patio of the School the base of the original wall that surrounded our city, can be seen.

The extension and suitability of the space enormously improved the acoustic conditions and of security, as well as they made possible the increase of the number of subjects and instrumental specialities. At the moment, the number of professors is of 31 and the number of students reaches the 800.

The following specialties are distributed within the four levels in which musical education in the Music Schools are organized: accordion, electricalbass/contrabass, singing, clarinete, fagot, flauta, guitar, oboe, percussion, piano, saxofón, altviol, violin, violonchelo, trombón, horn, trompet, tuba, harmony, choral song, combos, musical initiation (level 1), musical computer science, musical language.
